Built on what is internationally seen as the biggest land reclamation project ever, Lelystad is a city with a short, but interesting history. As the capital of a province that has only been made official in the 80s, it’s a modern place full of dynamic developments – including a range of natural reserves, national museums and the country’s first ever fashion outlet centre.
Flevoland is the 12th and newest province of the Netherlands. Consisting of two large polders – low-lying tracts of land enclosed by dykes and drainage canals – the area was built on land reclaimed from the former North Sea inlet of the Zuiderzee (Southern Sea). Lelystad is located in the larger Flevopolder, which was claimed in the late 1960s and started attracting people from all over the country from 1967 onwards. Fun fact: the city was named after the engineer responsible for its existence. Cornelis Lely engineered the Afsluitdijk causeway, the enclosing dyke that made the reclamation of land possible in the first place. Where the rest of the country is densely populated, Lelystad is spacious. The city offers room for living and working, but also provides plenty of recreational options. With just a 40-minute direct train journey from Schiphol airport and Amsterdam it’s very easy to reach, and a perfect base from which to discover a more Northern part of the country.

Harbour Facilities

The Bataviahaven Lelystad is situated at the crossroads of the IJsselmeer and Markermeer near the Houtrib locks (190×18 meters) and offers therefore a unique logistic position. A more than interesting alternative to the busy port of Amsterdam. Only 45 minutes by car from Amsterdam, Bataviahaven offers spacious and easily accessible mooring places for passenger ships. It’s a young port with modern facilities and a beautiful architecture. Moored ships are accessible for both buses for passengers and freight cars of loaders. In the proximity of the Bataviahaven are several tourist destinations. The port features a large and secure car park for long parking (€ 3.00 per day). Around the harbour are a large
number of restaurants. Interesting destinations such as Amsterdam, Volendam, Marken Wadden, Volendam, Enkhuizen, Medemblik, Kampen, Zwolle and Friesland and the West FrisianIslands, are in short sailing time accessible from the Bataviahaven Lelystad. It makes this porta comfortable departure port and an ideal place for the arrival and departure of passengers. With the opening of the new airport Lelystad Airport, the port is not only easily accessible across the water, by road and by public transport, but also by air. With the realization of the extended runway of Lelystad Airport, passengers fly from Europe destinations directly to Lelystad. The Bataviahaven is reachable in only 10-15 minutes by car from the airport. As of 1 October 2015, the new facilities such as electricity connections and three bulk drinking water pipes are ready. The Bataviahaven offers, in conjunction with a professional port service, good facilities for mooring for prolonged periods of time. Due to the presence of a professional bunker ship, also during the winter season, ships can take in fuel during their stay at Bataviahaven. There is enough space to dump residual waste and cardboard. Bus can come a few meters from the ship if necessary.
